How do I figure out the best therapy for me?

Therapy has always been in the news, but it’s never been more prevalent than in recent years. If getting therapy for you is on your mind, then you might be thinking of figuring out what kind of therapy might be best suited for you. There are many therapies available and you might find it challenging to zero in on the right one for you. This is when and where you will have to trust your therapist for they will be able to determine the right therapy for you. With that stated, let’s now walk through this blog to figure out the best therapy for you.

What is Therapy?

Therapy is a process in which one person, the therapist, helps another person, the client, to overcome emotional distress and difficulties in living.   It can be done in a one-to-one session with a therapist who will ask about your thoughts and feelings. Sometimes it is done with families, friends, or partners and the therapist. They will then try to help you find ways to improve your mental health and feel better about yourself.

The therapist does this by helping you explore your thoughts and feelings, looking at the way you behave and the things that have happened to you in the past. They may also suggest changes for you to make in your life or give you ways of dealing with difficult situations.

What are the Major Forms of Therapy?

There are many different forms of therapy that you can choose from to help with your mental health. Each form is different, but they all have the same goal: to help you live a healthier and happier life.

One type of therapy is called psychodynamic therapy. It helps people understand their thoughts and feelings in order to make changes in their lives. Another type is cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT helps people change their thoughts and behaviors by changing how they react to events or situations that may be causing them distress.

There are many different types of therapies that are practiced today. To mention a few:

  1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  2. Psychodynamic Therapy
  3. Narrative Therapy
  4. Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Therapy
  5. EMDR Therapy
  6. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  7. Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)
  8. Attachment Therapy
  9. Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
  10. Internal Family System Treatment Model

There are many therapy modalities available today and therapists figure out ways to give the appropriate therapies. Sometimes it may not be just one kind of therapy but a combination of one or more therapies according to your emotional need and you will have to trust your therapist’s choice of therapy for you.

Your Journey to Find the Right Kind of Therapy if You Need a Specific Therapy

At times when you are specific in your need for therapy, for example, if you are looking out for therapy for OCD, then you could directly reach out to  Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Therapist. And if you are looking for therapy for trauma, then you can opt for EMDR Therapy or trauma focussed CBT. Psychodynamic therapy may be used for those who suffer from an anxiety disorder, depression, eating disorder, or personality disorder. So, if you are specific in your need for therapy, then, you can reach out to the  therapist who specialises in that type of treatment.

Significance of Rapport with Your Therapist

Rapport with your therapist is essential for successful therapy. The effectiveness of the therapy depends on how well you connect with your therapist. When you’re in a safe, accepting environment with someone who understands and supports you, it can be easier to think about what you need, have difficult conversations, or share your feelings. You need to feel comfortable opening up about your life to be able to work through emotional issues. Therefore more than choosing what kind of therapy you need, you need to figure out if you have a good rapport with your therapist for effective therapy.

Concluding…

Therapy is not just a one-size-that-fits-all thing. It can be tailored to fit your needs, you just need to find the right form of therapy that works for you. Choosing the right therapy can be difficult. There are so many different types of therapy, each with its philosophies and practices, that it can be difficult to figure out which one is best for you. So unless you are sure of the therapy you need, trusting your therapist works best.
